Pugnaire & Raffini

Curated by Florian Pugnaire & David Raffini

Canvases slashed with a strap, vehicles and machines subjected to compression tests: at first glance, the me- chanics of destruction at work with Florian Pugnaire and David Raffini has a family look about it, involving New Realism. On closer inspection, this strategy of destruction is part and parcel of the process of making the work; the performance-related action and the gesture condition its appearance. For them, all methods of destruction permit action to give rise to the work, embarking the objects involved on a story which gradually gets further and further away from that of the readymade. «I pay a close attention to the concept of studio as the place for practice, but also as a place for fiction, an intervening space, where the work’s aim is not yet defined and where everything can be still invented or modified. » Florian Pugnaire and David Raffini (born in 1980 and 1982) live in Nice where they work together since 2009) They studied at Villa Arson and Moving images at the Fresnoy (Pugnaire). Recent show include TORRI gallery (2016), Galleria Continua 2015, La Maison Rouge, Foundation Antoine de Galbert (Prize winner from Friends of the Foundation) 2014, Palazzo Cavour, Torino (curated by Maurizio Cattelan and Myriam Ben Salah, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013, 2011, 2010).
